There really doesn’t have to be a lot of motivation from our standpoint.”• George Schroeder takes an indepth look at Tennessee coach Derek Dooley.• Rob Beard is making his 2010 debut this week and has been putting in lots of extra work.• Ted Miller has his week 2 predictions posted for the Pac-10 and picks Oregon by 15.Oregon 35, Tennessee 20: The Volunteers won't make things easy. The crowd at Neyland Stadium will be juiced. But the Ducks myriad offensive weapons will break through with difference-making big plays. Interested to see how quarterback Darron Thomas looks in the early going.Ted also does his "what to watch for" weekly series and wonders if Darron Thomas gets off to a fast start at Tennessee or gets rattled early.• Ken Goe has a trio of articles for your reading pleasure. Starting off, Ken says Oregon's offense should expect the unexpected."We're going to have to react off of what they do," [O-line coach Steve] Greatwood said. "Basically be in each other's thoughts and minds, every snap, without a lot of time to talk and make decisions. We're going to have to react rather than analyze."Next, Goe reports that C.E. Kaiser has fully recovered from his mild concussion and the Ducks will have everyone available to play on Saturday.Lastly, Ken does a Q&A with a reporter from the Knoxville area.• John Canzano shares his radio interview with Chip Kelly.• Chris Courtney shares his opinion on what to expect from the Volunteers."Their front seven is very impressive," stated [Chip] Kelly, "they're very athletic. We know Malik Jackson  a little bit because he's a USC transfer -- I thought he played a really good game (vs. Tennessee-Martin) -- all three linebackers are solid, so it's a talented group and we're going to be tested."• The Armenian Demon is back with his unique perspective on the Oregon vs Tennessee game.GO DUCKS! Oregon v Tennessee http://winesfamily.blogspot.com/2010/09/oregon-v-tennessee.html http://winesfamily.blogspot.com/2010/09/oregon-v-tennessee.html Fri, 10 Sep 2010 07:00:00 +0000 Article courtesy of Dave @ As Seen By DaveThanks for that Lobos.Okay...here is what we have learned from our first game...get ready...bet you can’t wait to read it...absolutely, positively, nothing. New Mexico couldn’t be a high school state championship team. They couldn’t keep from fumbling when our fourth string was in. No other team that we play, not even PSU, will play on that level. So, we don’t know much yet.But that makes this week all the more exciting! This week we will play a depleted Tennessee team...but let’s face it, they are still Tennessee. They still have a butt-load of fans. They still have athletes that can cause issues for our offense and defense.Still, the advantage has to be greatly in Oregon’s favor. What Tennessee doesn’t have is real experience. They are gonna roll out a ton of guys that have exactly one start on their resumé. What the Ducks provide is “seasoned” players that have played big games, have faced big crowds, and have beat much better teams.None of this is news. We all know it. We all expect to watch a Quack-Fest of epic proportions. So what can we add that isn’t so apparent. Well, who is going to show up for Oregon? Will Darron be the man? Will LaMichael thrust himself into the Heisman race after Kenjon already made that step? Will Maehl stiff-arm some sad back on his way to the promised land? Here’s what I see happening. I see the Ducks starting with a pretty scripted set of plays. It is likely to be loud, and they are going to want to keep it predictable for the offense. But, predictable doesn’t really fly for the Ducks, so I think they’re going to handle that with a lot of zone read plays. It keeps the defense guessing, but it is a play that the offense can run with one eye closed, and one hand behind the back.Of course we can’t just run zone reads. But I don’t think they are going to cut Darron lose quite yet. He’ll have several short passes, screens, and most importantly, he is going to look to Mr. Paulson for some easy completions. I think Paulson has a big game...maybe 5"7 receptions. And then POW...it’s going to be time to put the sting on them. I think we’re up by 21 at halftime, and win by 38. Just like that. I can be this confident, because one thing I know we can count on is the defense putting a hurt on their inexperienced players. Dare I say it? So scandelous. YES...the defense is going to pitch their second shutout of the season...in two games...they are so bad! We’ll focus on the run game that you know they’re going to try to establish...but nah...that won’t happen. It’s too predictable. So then they’ll open it up once we go up by a few touchdowns, and that’s when we take every last ounce of confidence from the QB. Two interceptions just like that, and no gas left in the tank. Shapoopi! Take that to the bank!PredictionsDT gets three touchdown passess...Maehl, Davis, and Paulson each hauling one in.LMJ runs for 117 yards, and has a touchdown.KB runs for 123 yards, and continues his move towards being a Heisman contender. One TD.Oregon 38Tennessee 0And now onto the uniforms. They way I see it, we have two options here. The game is on TV, so they may want to represent Oregon in a classic, recognizable way. They may also want to represent Oregon in a “futuristic” way.Classic from top to bottom--YellowWhiteYellowFuturistic Duck from top to bottom--Chrome DomeWhiteBlackAnd of course, being the Ducks, we’re gonna rock that futuristic look. So I plug along with my adaptive seed-saving and homestead projects, and everyone smiles at my "hobbies." I believe in a slow descent, beginning in my lifetime. It's already begun. But i'm not running for the hills. The emphasis is on slow. But descent (from the high tide of "civilization") is in the picture for sure. No, not so much from the global warming. That won't start killing rich white kids until after about 2050, meaning certain countries, mine included, won't feel sufficiently threatened by it to take action (way too late to do any good) until long after my time. And they will have enough troubles by then that they won't be able to take those actions. No, not so much from peak oil. There's truth in that, too, but at peak we have half the recoverable oil yet to burn (and choke on). It could be awhile before we panic much over that either. No, it will begin more, I think, with social disintegration. Conservatives have noticed this, and blame liberals (and blacks and browns and Asians and Muslims and gays and even transpeople (that would be little old me) for it, which is essentially false; but liberals blame conservatives for it, too, which is also pretty close to being false. That trouble originates not with people whose values have, or once had, their roots in a functional diversified subsistence agriculture, but with the cynical industrialists and bankers who  have, for a long time now, been playing us all for chumps -- and co-opting conservatives.I personally lay much of the blame for this on television, radio, print and Internet advertising and corporate sponsorships, including that for public media such as NPR -- and lobbying and campaign spending, all of which is rooted in the U.S. Supreme Court decision, back in the 1800s, to regard corporations as persons with rights -- the megacorporations' ads and commercials and Capital Hill connivings, with their wink-nudge ethos, have sapped the public domain and the will of millions to seek knowledge and judge of it critically. We, as a world, are slowly going insane from megacorporatism. And there's no cure. At best we can scurry around hoping the rotten apparatus doesn't hit us when it falls. As government processes driven by any other impulse than service to megacorporations grind to a halt, infrastructure service to the public will fray and ultimately shatter in many places; and as the local public infrastructures are all intimately bound together by what was, briefly in human history, the greatest public infrastructure of all time, the effects are extremely likely to snowball and bring the whole thing crashing down. Like what happened, on a smaller scale, in the fall of 2008.And then the conservatives will point to the liberals and the liberals will point to the conservatives and say, almost in unison, see, I told you so! While the industrialists and the bankers, much more at fault, will tiptoe away to their hideouts, which they've been fortifying for at least two generations now. From their point of view, all this is just so much population control, and it will have been successful -- except I don't think as highly of their fortresses' security measures as they do.Fossil energy will still be around in large quantities, but become difficult to transport or market effectively. This will exacerbate the food shortages, the water shortages, the sporadic attempts to mitigate the warming (which was caused by the transportation and marketing of fossil fuels), the electricity grid failures, all leading to further social disintegration, leading to more failures, and very likely to world resource war. Scarcity in the midst of plenty, brought on by simple greed "at the top."So social disintegration, for a largely urban (and very large) population within a framework of extreme infrastructure complexity, is the great danger. Almost anything can now nudge us off our balance beam: floods, storms, droughts, loss of ice cover or groundwater, crop failures, epidemics -- all of these are statistically associated with the warming, as actuaries in the insurance industry can tell you -- including the giant snowstorms. But also earthquakes and volcanoes and solar storms -- because disaster strains infrastructure, and our infrastructure is approaching the point at which it becomes more and more difficult to maintain.Y'wanna try and fix all this? Say, at the polls? Heh. Here in the U.S., the extra-constitutional 60-vote rule in the Senate will stop you before you start. Similar safeguards are in place elsewhere. Better start small. you won't fix anything, but you might mitigate the pain, for yourself and others, for awhile. After that, who knows?I'm fond of the endearing Transition Towns project, which if you are starry-eyed enough to want to sit in  a circle thinking up ways, with like-minded relatively powerless people, to regain the public domain in your town, may all the gods assist you, and may you succeed.I don't see much chance of convincing my largely Tea-Partyish neighborhood to go that route, personally. What's left to try, then, here? Starting even smaller, perhaps...The most accessible adaptive strategy, other than TT, I've seen online has been Mr. Greer's somewhat unfortunately named Green Wizards project. He is a proponent of General Systems Theory, which was the scientific movement, aka "cybernetics," that was the underpinning of, among other things, the Whole Earth Catalog and Coevolution Quarterly, which became redundant when the Internet came along.General Systems Theory was largely an academic movement with a side helping of back-to-the-landers, and its moderate success (Jerry Brown was a proponent) in the "real world," i.e., politics led to its being targeted and shut down by Ronald Reagan, whose administration pulled all the grants out from under everyone involved. Green Wizards will attempt to collect adaptive literature from that bygone era and make it available (he urges that we print everything out), organized in three Rings: Food, Heat, Crafts. The idea is that when our local communities get desperate, we might find an audience for these strategies, and be useful to them from a subsistence-and-mutual-aid standpoint. It's a form of hoarding the public domain on the public's behalf.Fritz Schumacher, who wrote Small is Beautiful, was a general systems thinker, and founded the Intermediate Technology Development Group, which was (and still is, under the name Practical Action) an effort to liaison with third world subsistence economies and help resist conversion to industrial/world trade economies -- because subsistence is more resilient. I see Green Wizards as like Practical Action, but aimed at the "first world's"  impending poverty as well as that of the "third world." It's somewhere along that continuum. So, I hope, are you and I.I recommend subsistence and resilience, along with getting to know the neighbors, a mixture of Greer and Sharon Astyk, as the sane approach. But don't ask me if I think it will work ... sigh. S'gonna go down heavy. But not all that soon. Meanwhile, enjoy the sunrises. Darron Thomas looked like he and a receiver got crossed up, and Eddie Pleasant came down with a pick on the first play for the ones. Nate Costa  couldn’t get so much as a first down with the twos. Two ways to look at all that sort of stuff, obviously, good for the defense, bad for the offense. From Ken: Oregon guard C.E. Kaiser (neck) wore a red, no contact jersey for practice. His participation was limited. I saw no other injuries of note.• A lot has been made of the fact that Tennessee has former Boise St. defensive coordinator, Justin Wilcox, working for them now and George Schroeder looks at the implications. He’s nervous this week, too, but that’s nothing new. And it has nothing to do with coaching against his alma mater, and against former coaches and good friends. It has everything to do with stopping the Oregon spread.“Fifty-two points in 18 minutes, 8 seconds,” he says, talking about the Ducks’ scoring spree in the first half against New Mexico, illustrating his challenge.• Ken Goe has a similar article on the defensive coordinator at Tennessee.• Goe also talks with Coach Kelly on playing Tennessee.“I would like to continue to play games like this,” Kelly said. “It’s good for your fan base. It’s good for your players. From the second he walked out, he owned the stage. And for the next forty-five minutes he put on a display of impeccable comic timing, improvisation, and craft. The guy has the best delivery in the business, and some of the quickest reactions. This was a master at work.It reminded me of how much Letterman has meant to me through the years. From the '80s through the '90s I was aware of him, and watched him when I could - I'm 40, and it's fair to say I was part of the generation that grew up on Letterman's brand of humor. Between periods out of the country and periods when I just didn't own a TV, I never got to watch him regularly until 1999, when I came back from an extended stint in Japan. For the next six or seven years I watched almost every night...until finally it became apparent that he was just going through the motions. I know a lot of people gave up on him long before that, but I thought he was incredibly strong in the early '00s. His running Campaign 2000 bit in that year was the best commentary (completely dada) on that crazy season in our national life, and of course he was the guy who got us through 9/11. But eventually I had to admit that his show was stale. I stopped watching him regularly a couple of years ago, and I haven't watched him at all in about a year.Maybe I'll tune in tonight. Because this morning he reminded me of why during many of my years outside the US, Letterman was the piece of American pop culture I missed most: that dry, wiseass wit. I'm on the record as not liking snark, and he basically invented it, but Letterman's different; you can always sense an angry, passionate intelligence just beneath the surface. And even when he's not particularly engaged, he's still probably the best remaining practitioner of a particular, ancient and honorable, brand of professional comedy. That's a lot of qualifiers, I guess. But anyway, maybe we still need Letterman. Rob Beard drilled a 38-yard field goal in a clutch situation with the offense trailing by two points, but Nate Costa and the twos were unable to convert with 40 seconds left needing a touchdown.Darron Thomas put the first offense in position for the “game-winning” field goal, in his first practice following his debut as the Ducks’ starting quarterback Saturday.• Moseley also shares his feature article from yesterday's R-G as the Ducks focus on Tennessee. Notes about the Vols top receiver who will likely miss the game due to injury and part 2 of his round table discussion with other reporters on recruiting.• Adam Jude talks with LaMichael James about preparing for his season debut. To have success Saturday, James knows the real work must begin today, the start of the Ducks’ game-week preparations.“You can’t just show up on Saturday and expect, ‘Hey, I’m gonna be this great player,’” he said. “You have to show up on Monday, too.”• Ted Miller has some quick previews of week two, a Pac-10 rewind article and his Pac-10 Power Rankings going into week two.1. Oregon: New Mexico isn't very good, but the Lobos badness doesn't completely account for 72-zip and 720 total yards. The Ducks look athletic and poised on both sides of the ball. First up, George Schroeder, says we have nothing to worry about "this kid can play."Darron Thomas raced downfield, and caught the guy, and then he brought him down. And here was the criticism from the Oregon coaching staff:“It was too clean,” offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich said. “We don’t want him to look that good.”Yeah, that’s about it. Oregon beat New Mexico by the astonishing score of 72-0 on Saturday.• Adam Jude says the shutout over the Lobos was a team effort. There was a lot to like for a defensive coordinator, and Nick Aliotti certainly enjoyed his unit’s first shutout in seven years Saturday afternoon. The Ducks held New Mexico to 107 total yards, an average of 1.8 per play, and forced five turnovers in a 72-0 rout.“It was awesome. It really was awesome, and we should all enjoy tonight,” Aliotti said.• Adam also reports on the starting debut of Darron Thomas and what his teammates thought.“I saw some things from him that I haven’t seen from other quarterbacks,” [Nate] Costa said. “It was his first start, and he was a little nervous in the beginning, and that’s understandable, everyone’s going to feel that. But he settled down more quickly than I’d seen from other people in the past. For his first start, I think he did a helluva job.”Nate is always the gentleman, classy guy.• Ron Bellamy looks at the special teams and they were just that, special.Sophomore Cliff Harris, the backup to return specialist Kenjon Barner, took the first two punts he fielded for touchdowns of 61 and 64 yards, becoming the first Oregon player to return two punts for scores in one game.Walk-on freshman kicker Eric Solis, who played while projected starter Rob Beard served a one-game suspension, connected on his first 11 placements " eight conversions and field goals of 24, 29 and 30 yards " to match a UO school record and tacked on another extra point after his fourth field goal attempt was blocked.• Rob Moseley shares what Chip Kelly had to say in yesterday afternoons teleconference with reporters.Darron Thomas graded out really well. Kenjon Barner's role in next weeks game at Tennessee hasn't changed in light of his record tying performance. Rob Beard will return next week as the placekicker.Defensively, Kelly said Brandon Bair graded out the best on the line, while Casey Matthews, Josh Kaddu and Bo Lokombo also looked good on the video. • Ted Miller reports on "what we learned" in the Pac-10 on the first week.FCS teams have no chance vs. the Pac-10: Arizona State, Cal and Stanford buried three FCS teams by a combined count of 168-29. While that's really not something to celebrate, at least one BCS conference[SEC] can't say the same this morning.• Lindsay Schnell at the Oregonian reports on how future Ducks did in high school play this weekend in a new feature called "Friday Night Lights, Oregon Duck Style."Johnny Manziel is probably tired after attempting 75 passes and racking up 503 yards and four touchdowns in Tivy's 39-34 win over Madison. Oh yeah, he also ran for 78 yards and one touchdown.• Ken Goe call the Oregon win impressive but notes it will be tougher next week. The Ducks put the hammer down.It gets tougher this week in Knoxville, Tenn. This might the worst Tennessee team in recent memory, but the Volunteers still will be a big step up in competition level. How good is this Oregon team?Stay tuned.GO DUCKS! Very early Santana http://sgttanuki.blogspot.com/2010/09/very-early-santana.html http://sgttanuki.blogspot.com/2010/09/very-early-santana.html Mon, 6 Sep 2010 03:06:00 +0000 Santana is a band, not a man, or so goes the theory: in practice, most of Carlos Santana's solo work is pretty indistinguishable from his eponymous band's output, but it is true that his music is always more than just him and some sidemen. And if only because he doesn't sing, Carlos doesn't tend to dominate his bands the way, say, Clapton does his. Santana, when billed as such, is a band.Of course for most of us there's only one Santana band, the first one. The one that gave us the only three Santana albums that matter*: Santana, Abraxas, and Santana III. The Santana that slew everybody at Woodstock. But it turns out that this wasn't the first Santana band. It was the second. The first one consisted of Carlos on guitar, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, David Brown on bass, Marcus Malone on congas, and Bob "Doc" Livingston on drums. The first three, of course, were the instrumental core of the Woodstock-era band, but the two percussions were replaced for the first album. Is this ur-Santana worth checking out? Surprisingly enough, it is. Where can you check it out? Three places.First you'll want to track down the 1988 compilation Viva Santana! Hokey name, but worth getting if you're a Santana collector, because it has a ton of rarities. The one that concerns us here is "Ballin'," a demo recorded in late 1967 by this original lineup. A demo, it's called, but it was clearly professionally recorded, and it shows, in six and half minutes of instrumental fire, the musical conception of the classic Santana band already fully-formed. Hot crying guitar, cool caressing Hammond organ, seductive multi-percussionist rhythms. If this is the earliest Santana available, it's a magnificent overture for the man's career. You'll also want to get the 2004 reissue of the eponymous debut album, the two-disc "Legacy Edition." This is a problematic release; it claimed to include, among its goodies, the complete Woodstock set, but in fact it's missing one song - which later came out on a two-disc set that includes the first album, the complete Woodstock set (for reals this time), but not the other bonus tracks from the Legacy Edition. Typical Sony/Columbia chain-jerking. Anyway, among those bonus tracks are six studio recordings from early 1969 that constitute the band's first attempt at recording their debut album. And although the liner notes to this edition very ungraciously fail to name-check Malone and Livingston, they are in fact the percussionists on these sessions. Now, these tracks - early drafts of "Soul Sacrifice," "Persuasion," "Treat," "Shades Of Time," and "Jingo," plus a studio take of "Fried Neckbones And Some Home Fries" - are mostly disappointing, just like you'll read in any number of discussions of the classic album. They really are unfocused, slightly dead-sounding jams; particularly disappointing after the excitement of "Ballin'." I'm not sure I can even recommend checking them out, although "Shades Of Time" is interesting because it's not on the live album, so this is the only way to (legitly) check out the early stage in this song's evolution. ...It's worth noting that the liner notes to the live album (see below) mention that the first album was originally going to be called Freeway Jam, after a song by that name recorded during the sessions. But it's not here (although it shows up on the live disc). The notes to the Legacy Edition say this is the complete unreleased album, but is it? Or are we going to get yet another reissue someday with "Freeway" on it? This is Columbia/Sony: of course we are.The live album. In 1997 Sony, who can do some things almost right, released a two-disc live document called Live At The Fillmore 1968, which features the original lineup. Drawn from shows at the Fillmore West on December 19, 20, 21, and 22, 1968, it was an odd move, coming at a time when the classic Woodstock lineup still hadn't been featured on a full-length live album. But never mind: we're glad we have it. And while we're never minding, let's try to forget about the fact that each disc in the set is under an hour long, while bootlegs from the era suggest that the band had more songs in their repertoire than are represented on this release. We're still glad we have it.Because it's fantastic music. Carlos, Rolie, and the underappreciated Brown are just tearing it up on these nights, while Malone and Livingston hold their own: they're not Shrieve, Carabello, and Areas, but they hold their own.The set includes four of the tunes that would eventually make up the first album. "Jingo" and "Soul Sacrifice" are pleasant, but definitely pale in comparison with what they'd become. "Persuasion" has yet to be tightened up into a by-gum-that's-a-pop-song; here it starts out with a shaggy fusion vamp before settling into the song portion. You can see why they stripped it down for the final version, but you can also tell that the earlier arrangement was more fun to play live, and maybe even to hear live. Lots of nuance and drama to this arrangement. But the prize of the familiar numbers is "Treat," stretched out to twice its album length here. Still follows the same basic pattern, but Rolie's piano work benefits from the room to stretch out. This is the Santana band as classic jazzers, a role they pull off with astonishing conviction. They had the goods. The balance of the album consists of numbers that would never show up on an official album. The Willie Bobo number "Fried Neckbones," Chico Hamilton's "Conquistadore Rides Again," and Albert King's "As The Years Go Passing By," plus the originals "Chunk A Funk" and "Freeway."Quite simply, these should have been the band's first album, and Santana the second. "Fried Neckbones" and "Conquistadore" are as funky and catchy as anything the classic band ever did, with that confident, at-home looseness that only the Fillmore could breed. "As The Years Go Passing By" is maybe the most assured blues performance to come out of San Francisco that year, and is a welcome representation of the straight-blues side of the band, a side that was fully assimilated into the Latin melange by the time the first album was recorded, but which in the beginning was raw enough that they called themselves the Santana Blues Band."Freeway," meanwhile, is...I'd love to hear a studio version of this someday. Live, it's a half hour long, and it almost justifies its length: it's their "Who Do You Love," their "Dark Star," their "Bear Melt": lots of solos all around. I don't mind this kind of thing, obviously; there are some who think this kind of thing was self-indulgent, but (a) what's the point of rock if you're not going to indulge, and (b) you have to understand that these jams were meant for dancing, and as a dancer as well as a musician, when you're in the groove, you don't want it to end, and the whole point of the SF scene was to ask, well, why should it have to end? "Freeway" has a great riffy first seven or eight minutes, before all the solos start, and that's why I'd love to hear a proper studio version: what did they consider the essential part of the song? Live, a lot of it is taken up by a percussion duet, and it's here that the inferiority of the Malone/Livingston battery to the Shrieve/Carabello/Areas team becomes glaringly apparent. But in the last six or so minutes the rest of the band comes back in, and all is forgiven. An essential listen, made all the more so by the fact that it documents a band that is otherwise all but lost to history.*For the record, I don't buy this line. I think Caravanserai is interesting, and Welcome and Borboletta are damn near essential albums. I haven't gone beyond them yet.
