Seen at Nature Church today, a momma deer and her adolescent twins. This little guy and I startled each other coming around the corner. I saw his mom up the ravine my trail was traversing. After keeping my distance for a while, I took a few slow steps closer, and this guy took a couple [...]

At Sauvie Island for Saturday Nature Church, we also saw about a million Canada geese, one Blue Heron, two deer, a flock of sandhill cranes, a bunch of smelt, and a really big tundra swan in the rehab pen. Copyright © 2013 More Hockey Less War. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only.

I can’t remember not being interested in nature. When I was younger I was drawn to the challenge and thrill of the high ground, be it Colorado fourteeners or, later, glaciated Cascade volcanic peaks. I was always trying to get to the highest ridge or butte around, just for the view, if nothing else. But [...]
Stompin’ Tom Connors 1936-2013 Vancouver Observer blogger Alan O’Sullivan had this remembrance on his Twitter feed: Oh wow. RIP Stompin Tom. I was on a plane with him when I was 5 years old… — Alan O’Sullivan (@RollingPucks) March 7, 2013 …he was wasted and singing and everyone thought he’d put

photo by MiniQQ The wife and I found ourselves in downtown Portland for breakfast yesterday, and thought we’d hit longtime Portland fave Bijou Cafe. That didn’t work out; the line was out the door (but not around the block like the one for Voodoo Donuts down the street). We could have grabbed a crappy cup [...]

We had our third annual Puppy Bowl Party today. Today’s menu included: Cheese Pizza!! Chips and Cheesey Poofs!! Nachos!! Guacamole!! Chocolate Fondue!! I’ve never shared my guacamole recipe with anyone, so if you’re reading this, consider yourself elite. I honed this recipe over many years working produce.
We just got through a cold snap, with some amazing hoar frost, especially at the higher eleveations. This is at Cooper Mountain Nature Park, at about 800 feet. Copyright © 2013 More Hockey Less War. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only.
Hey PPS: You don’t “balance enrollment” by closing more schools in poor neighborhoods. How about you start by sending kids to school in their neighborhood? Fucking duh. It’s the transfer policy, stupid. I started telling you this five years ago. Did you listen? Board member Ruth Adkins pretended to.

We often think of Pacific Northwest winters as bland, gray and dreary, but in truth, we get some fantastic winter light around here. Copyright © 2013 More Hockey Less War. This Feed is for personal non-commercial use only.
We tried to go to nature church on Mt. Hood yesterday, and while the weather was fine and the snow was plentiful, we saw far too many Great Apes and Domestic Canines and no wildlife at all. So we went to nature church at the beaver pond today and saw, in addition to our resident [...]

At first, upon entering the forest, you feel you’ve entered a whole different world. But then one day you realize it’s not a different world, it’s the world, the actual planet you live on. It’s great to be an ape. Copyright © 2012 More Hockey Less War. This Feed is for personal non-commercial us

River Mile 7.3 – 11.2 We just hung up the canoe for the season, a couple wishful weeks after our last weekend of good paddling weather. Our final days took us back to Tigard’s Cook Park, the same as day 1. This time we headed downstream to the I-5 bridge. With the exception of one [...]
I think I still owe a Tualatin River Diaries entry for our last 2 days of paddling this year. That will have to wait. Meanwhile here are some Autumn nature pics from Z and Steve’s Church of Nature (meets every weekend at a green space near us). Yesterday, we went to “Newt Day” at Tualatin [...]
