The Ballad Town Blog

I’m a little late in posting anything new here – so please forgive me.  It has been a very busy month.  May is normally busy for us anyway – what with Spring yard chores, band practices, work, and birthdays.  But this last May – well it was just a tad bit busier than most. You see, [...] No rela

What a wild and stormy week! Last week I went to work to find an entire tree laying on its side in the parking lot, and came home that next morning to a dusting of snow in my driveway.  And we thought that spring had arrived early!  Maybe it did – but it looks like winter [...] No related posts.

Gov. Ted Kulongoski ordered flags at all public institutions to be flown at half-staff Thursday in memory of Pfc. Erin L. McLyman of Eugene. The 26-year-old died March 13 in Iraq from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked her base with mortar fire. She was assigned to the 296th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Stryker B

I just finished a long week of work today, and thought I’d splurge a little and go out into the Grove tonight for dinner.  But where to go?  Since I usually make a homeade pizza on my first night off of work, I thought of Papa Murphys.  But you still have to take it home [...] No related posts.

Not sure who this guy is, but I did have a need to recycle some fluorescent bulbs today.  Naturally, all 4 in the laundry room looked shot, so I zipped on over to Home Depot and picked up a few packs.  (sorry Ace/ BiMart – I had to go out that way anyway) A few hours [...] No related posts.

As I was coming home from grocery shopping today I saw a few new signs around town… FOR LEASE signs. Last month it was Basco’s Burgers in Cornelius.  Thirty years in the business and then gone, just like that. Today I saw Triple Point Biologics was empty.  They were the protein lab located between Dr Tidwell&#

I remember when I first moved to Forest Grove in ‘97.  There were at least 3 video stores.  Video USA was in the Safeway Shopping Center, Movie Madness was in my old strip mall next to Da Boys.  And I think there was a smaller video store next to Scotty’s that rented harder to find [...] No related posts.

Where do we go from here? That was the question posed at the Forest Grove Town Meeting last month.  Although I did not have a chance to attend, there has been a lot of discussion on the bulletin boards around town.  Suggestions like turning Forest Grove into a Wine gateway,  adding a Town Center, or bringing [...] No r

I remember the first time I heard them.  It must have been about 12 years ago, right after we moved here.  “What in the heck is that!?” I asked my wife.  She said it sounded like a baby was crying.  Sounded more like some poor woman was screaming at the top of her lungs to [...] No related posts.

For all of us older folks, do you remember some of the things you grew up with, that have disappeared over the years?  Things like the 8-Track player?  Or how about the Betamax?  I remember as a teenager going to the music store to buy the latest record album.  (that’s those big, round, vinyl things [...] No rel

If you like good dance music, pop on over to the Visitation School Gymnasium in Verboort on Friday, Feb 5. At 6:30 dance lessons will be provided by the Banks Dance Academy.  Come on, I know you’ve always wanted to learn a little Salsa Dancing, admit it.  It all turns over to dancing at 7:30 with [...] No related

I love Forest Grove.  But there is one subject I complain about when it comes to my town – and that is the selection of Grocery Stores.  Namely the ONE and ONLY grocery store.   Safeway. I guess I’m just one of those people who loves to hate Safeway.  Sure it’s local, and been in town a [...] No rel

Christmas and New Years have now come and gone, time to start taking down the decorations.  But what do you do with that tree?  Here are some options for Forest Grove. Option 1:  Recycle Many nonprofit organizations offer pickup services or locations where you can take Christmas trees and wreaths to be recycled.  They

No, I wouldn’t recommend duct taping your cell phone to your ear, but I would recommend something, because as of today it is illegal in Oregon to chat on your cell phone while driving.  If you decide to chance it anyway, and get caught, it could mean a $142 fine. So what do you do?  Look [...] No related posts.

Happy New Years Forest Grove.   Here’s to a happy and prosperous 2010. And – if by chance you celebrate a “wee” bit too much – remember that rides on TriMet buses and MAX light rail will be free of charge starting at 8 p.m.   Yellow, Green and Blue line trains will continue running every 30

I finally got out to visit some of my old neighbors in the shopping center yesterday.  For the restaurants like Quiznos and Cornerstone, who rely so much on Pacific University traffic, this time of year can be a bit slow.  I was happy to find they are both still there, along with La Sierra, and [...] No related posts.

I wondered if it might snow today when I saw the red sky this morning during the sunrise.  Remember the old saying, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight?  Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning” ?  Proved true today.   I just don’t think people had any idea of how much snow we would [...]

It’s funny that I still remember all the rumors floating around town back in 2007.  Albertson’s was coming, then Haagens.  I heard that Foreign Car Specialists and JD Pence was going to become a Rite-Aid.  That was a “done deal”.  Well – they’re empty, and I don’t see a Rite-Aid

Everybody’s Hometown Band geared up to join the 2009 Twinkle Light Parade this year.  Wow, what a cold night.  We had just performed at Zoo Lights that Tuesday, and I thought it was cold then.  Was I ever wrong.  What is it about a brass instrument that transmits the coldness so well?  My fingers froze [...] No

Welcome to Forest Grove Live.  Or should I say – welcome back. I originally published this little blog way back in February of 2006.  The main intention was to provide a way for local FG residents to stay up to date on what was happening in our little neck of the woods.  At the time, [...] No related posts.
