"Just give me one extra season so I can figure out the other four" (John Prine)

So, here we are in the evening, catching up with the final significant stage of the 2010 Tour de France. Thanks to our Tivo, and the Versus channel, we have seen every minute of the 3 week Tour de France. But that is a lot of TV hours. In order to fit all [...]

We  found this nice field of clover one cool summer day during a weekend bicycle ride through the farmlands west of Mt. Angel.  It was during the Petal Pedal starting at the Oregon Gardens. Fifty miles on the bikes in the country is a pleasant day.  This is a good use of clover, and it [...]

Our company has a large fish tank in the front lobby, next to our receptionist. Today, she sent out this e-mail. To: Office Leroy was a good fish.  He didn’t ask much from this life, just a good sized rock over his head, an algae pellet every other day and he was content.  Leroy was an [...]

Some wonderful little kids in old school class photos turn out to be really wonderful adults. (I’m not really talking about the girl with the arrow on her, though I think she is great as well.)

I have become a Beaver baseball fan. For the last few years, I have listened to nearly every single game, via the Internet, and I track their record and opponents. I even keep a schedule highlighted in color codes for wins/losses. So, early this morning, I found myself in a very long/slow moving security [...]

A knock on your door first thing in the morning, and you find out your car was just smashed. When it was parked. Outside your front door.  Looks like its time for a new car. At least the driver should have some good insurance.

On Super Bowl Sunday we spent the day wandering in the Gorge. First stop, the Starvation Creek rest area. Nice place to stretch the legs and wander on the paths along the creek. We went into Hood River and out into the Parkdale area, stopping at Foothills Yarn and Fiber, where they raise Alpacas, and have a [...]

Ideal ratio: 2 to 1. Any higher and you’re not riding enough. Any lower and you can’t focus on training because you are getting divorced. ~ Scott Martin Scott Martin, author of the eBook Spin Again containing 181 of his witty, sometimes wacky, and occasionally heart-felt observations on road cycling.

Recently, the local paper in my old home town, the “Tri-County News” shutdown.  Falling victim to the failing economy and changing dynamics of how people get the information they need.  Newspapers still provide some useful functions, filling in the gaps that electronic media doesn’t seem to do well yet.

We snowshoed out from Bennett Pass rest area, along the ridge to one of our favorite viewpoints. The rains and warmer weather has turned this weeks now into a crunchy walk, hard enough that our poles rarely penetrated the surface. And no snows on the trees at all. We were walking in the low laying clouds, [...]

We took a little time to ride around Oregon City prior to the new Year. It was really pretty cold, but sunny and clear, and with the right layer of clothing we kept pretty comfortable. The ride took us late into the day and snow began to fall as we made our way home. But, [...]

Danish aebleskiver on Christmas.

Before all the Christmas festivities began, there was time, and sun, and the opportunity to get on the bike. So I decided to ride out over the bridge to take a closer look at some of the issues before work began. The planned January closing date has been pushed back to allow time for [...]

Victorhill Farm. This is where we have cut our Christmas tree for the last 4 years.  We found it because it opened earlier than most, which allowed us to prepare for a Christmas party. Once there, Honey has discovered that her taste matches that of Blenda the artist/owner. She loves the stuff they sell in their [...]

Bad news good news. Honey is gone to visit family for 5 days, so shes not here. She left me in control while she’s gone.

We have installed hummingbird feeders in front and back.  The feeders have been pretty busy in the dawn and dusk hours.  Honey makes new nectar every week in order to keep it fresh and our little hummers seem to appreciate it.  We have begun to study their habits, and note which birds seem to make [...]

Demolition of the southwest Portland home known as the Canterbury Castle started back in May of 2009. We made a quick trip out to see it one last time. Haven’t been back there since that time, so unsure where they are in that whole process. And not much on the web about the progress.  Guess the process [...]

Remember, the Oregon City Bridge is closing after the first of the year. For like two years. So, guess that means even more traffic for the Sellwood, Oregon’s most heavily travelled two lane bridge. Looks like they are going to be shuttling bikes and walker though. One more reason to ride a bike? For more info: ODOTs

Poffertjes, are a traditional delicacy sold from poffertjes kramen (booths) in Dutch villages and towns in the Netherlands.  Often they are sold from a colorful tent which is pitched at the village for a few days and moves on to market them elsewhere.  We did in fact find a tent in a park during one [...]

Today is the final day of the Netherlands leg of our Bike Tour 2009. As in days past, The Zeeland leaves port by 7:00 am, and we watch the country side slide by as we have breakfast and prepare for the day.  We make it to the locks near Gem Nijkerk just before 9:00 am and [...]

On this morning The Zeeland pushes off from the dockside of the Ijssel river, in Kampen,  promptly at 7:00 am. Headed northe, downriver to the Ketelmeer, and then southeast through the wide canals to Harderwijk. Today would be loop ride out and back in to Harderwijk.  The boat cruised as we dressed, had breakfast, and [

On our latest trip to Louisville, I was once again able to sample the local foods.  This time, it was the “Louisville Hot Brown”. The route today was slightly changed from the original plan of taking a loop tour out and back in to Zutphen.  Today we ride on to Deventer. As always, the breakfast bell rings at 8:00 am and we all head up to the dining hall.  For each breakfast Linda provides us with an array of [...]

This may be too much information, but I don’t really suffer from saddle soreness due to long hours on the bike.  To me, the key is finding the correct seat and shorts that fit.   In our cycling circles, there is a somewhat odd allegience to Bag Balm, an old trusted standard in ointments to [...]

Early Sunday morning I found myself deep in NW  Portland, with my bike.  I had no set schedule, and no required route, which gave me the chance to just ride in any direction that seemed interesting.  Soon I found myself at the Union Station train-yards where I discovered the Union Station pedestrian bridge.  Nice lookin
