As summertime approaches, all the water fountains are now on in the parks and at the Hillsboro Civic Center. This includes the new play fountain at 53rd Avenue Park, which is now the biggest in town.

Old growth native Oak trees dominate Shadywood Park, located in the middle of the city, which provide plenty of shade, thus the park name. Additionally, the park has picnic areas, a playground, and even a volleyball court.

The little known Ki-a-Kuts Falls remained lost until 1993, and remain obscure despite some media coverage. Part of the problem is the remoteness, while another difficulty is that there is not a trail to the waterfall.

Free kid's fair in Hillsboro goes from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday and features SWAT and other emergency vehicles. Plus kids can learn bike safety from the county sheriff's office.

Opened in 1990, Turner Creek Park is becoming one of the older parks in the city. The medium sized park includes two tennis courts, some ball fields, off-street parking, and plenty of natural areas split by the namesake Turner Creek.

Hillsboro has over 40 public tennis courts between parks and schools, and the parks department has a variety of programs to teach you how to play the game.

Another road widening project on a major north-south route will start next year as the widening on Cornelius Pass Road is finished. This project will add a center turn lane to Brookwood between Main/Baseline and TV Highway.

Part of Orenco Station, the park is one of the few parks in the city's park system that was not developed by the city. The park has a half-basketball court, a playground, picnic areas, and a large fire pit designed for groups.

Activities around town run the gamut from classical music to lacrosse, with a couple farmers' markets in between. There is even inmate artwork on display downtown and a dog show at the fairgrounds.

Starting in June the section between the MAX line and Baseline will be closed for up to eight months. Currently prep work is being completed on the section, as well as improvements to the west on NW 231st as it is prepared to serve as the main detour route.

The twenty-year-old park features more than meets the eye for those who take time to explore the hidden natural areas. For the less adventurous, there are still your standard park features like a playground and picnic tables.

As always, May 5th is Cinco de Mayo, which falls on a Wednesday this year. So the events were over the weekend, which leaves the main option for celebrating as your local Mexican restaurant not named Taco Bell. And Hillsboro has plenty of Mexican restaurants from mom and pop joints to your chain places.

Hillsboro's oldest park lies along TV Highway where it becomes Tenth, and still has the only city pool. It also has a library branch, lots of picnic tables, and is home to Showtime at Shute, a summer concert series.

You can buy some plants, books, fresh vegies, or even some antiques this weekend in Hillsboro. If you are not looking to buy, you can check on the Kentucky Derby or West Side Story at The Venetian.
